Find out why Angela Merkel was interested in the Factory of the Future

Hannover Messe 2018 in retrospect

Angela Merkel and Enrique Peña Nieto are asking questions about the XDK from Bosch

Two very prominent guests were among the 200,000 visitors at the Hannover Messe 2018, who informed themselves about topics including Industry 4.0, logistics solutions, smart robots, and the energy system of the future. Angela Merkel and the Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto visited the Hannover Messe to gain insights from the exhibitors who presented their solutions under the lead theme ‘Integrated Industry.’

Hannover Messe 2018 - Flashback

Angela Merkel’s curiosity for the Cross Domain Development Kit

There was a big surprise for Bosch Connected Devices and Solutions (BCDS), as the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto paid a long visit at the Bosch exhibition booth. Angela Merkel was especially interested in the Cross Domain Development Kit (XDK) and the ‘Factory of the Future.’ On stage, she asked numerous questions about the XDK and followed it up several times. Stefan Hartung, the member of the board of management at Bosch, answered those questions in dialogue. Although this was a huge achievement for BCDS, this was not the only breakthrough at the Hannover Messe.

New approaches due to a close cooperation with Bosch Rexroth

Bosch and Bosch Rexroth also exhibited once more at this year's Hannover Messe. Nonetheless, this time it was something special. In the years before, the Bosch Rexroth department always had its own booth at the Hannover Messe. Even before the takeover by Bosch, Rexroth was a world leader in their field. This year, Bosch Connected Devices and Solutions (BCDS) and Rexroth wanted to move closer together, because the tasks of the future have a great intersection. The desire for a closer cooperation was taken into account with a huge booth of almost 1,300 square meters.

NOW, NEXT and BEYOND – Factory of the Future

The winners of this cooperation were the visitors of the fair, who profited from the bundled strength of Rexroth Hydraulic products as well as sensors and algorithms from Bosch. The grown collaboration of all Bosch departments offered a real benefit for the visitors and customers. To underline this, the booth this year was themed as ‘Factory of the Future.’ In the Factory of the Future, everything is much more advanced. Therefore, Bosch exhibited the complete way of "NOW, NEXT, and BEYOND" to visitors.

What happens ‘NOW’ at the Factory of the Future?

Bosch Connected Devices and Solutions was mainly part of the “NOW” segment. Our clever multi-sensor Cross Domain Development Kit (XDK) and Connected Industrial Sensor Solution (CISS) are already in use all over the world and are helping to monitor the machines of today's factories and production plants. Retrofitted to the existing factory, they are a cost-effective and efficient solution to move to an IoT setup without buying an entire new factory. This makes them an adequate solution to enable Industrial Automation, for example. Due to their versatile potential, a lot of use cases are possible.

What happens ‘NEXT’ at the Factory of the Future?

Nonetheless, BCDS also contributes in terms of “NEXT.” By applying the XDK or CISS to the factory, the plant operators will be informed in advance if maintenance of the machines is necessary. Here, the device measures the vibrations in a machine via the internal acceleration sensor. Each machine has completely common vibrations that occur during operation. The operators and manufacturers of the machine are familiar with this vibration profile. But if the machine's vibration profile changes, this may be due to a small bearing damage or something similar. If such defects are identified at an early stage, a machine breakdown can often be prevented. At the next regular maintenance of the machine, the required spare part is ready and can be replaced. This process prevents major breakdowns and production losses, and accordingly saves a lot of money.

What happens ‘BEYOND’ at the Factory of the Future?

In the future, factories will be a kind of ‘shell’ in which the floors serve the power supply, whereas the ceiling connects the machines via 5G. The other parts of the factory are completely variable and adjustable according to if the production needs to be expanded or adapted. Furthermore, other interesting developments and solutions are possible. We can be confident and curious about what will happen in the future.

In summary, it can be said that the Hannover Messe 2018 was a great experience for Bosch and all visitors. We are looking forward to the next year, when the Hannover Messe opens its gates again and people from all over the world visit the Bosch booth once more.
